(Taken from our Sabbath Service, July 8, 2016)

We are a community of faith. A Seventh-day Adventist congregation with beliefs, values and hope that we hold dear. Still, we live in a world that is broken, divided, and filled with heartache. A world God loves. A world we are a part of.

This week our nation was again faced with this brokenness and division:

The lives of men taken by those who had sworn to protect them.

The liv...

Why does God allow suffering?

If you believe in God and you believe that God is good you have some exlaining to do.

You've probably run into this argument before:

 God created everything

   and Evil exists

 God created evil

 God cannot be good.

How do we respond to this?

How can God be good (just) in such a broken world?

We call this explanation a theodicy.

There are quite a few ways to answer this que...

“And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.” (Acts 19:26 NIV11-GK)

Do you believe in God?

This is probably the most polarizing question we can ask in our society. Just follow a debate and you will see vitriol from both sides: "How could you be so stupid? Yo...

Do you like to argue?

I do.

You probably do too.

Some of you are shaking your head saying, "No, not me."

You are just the kind of person I'd love to argue with to prove you wrong! I'm joking. A little.

But here is the truth: While not everyone loves to argue, everyone loves to win an argument.

That's a big problem when we start disagreeing about anything, especially when it matters.

Our love for winni...

On Sept 1st, 1945, a Japanese pastor by the name of Robert Nomi organized a church in the small town of Kailua with just 12 members. Having just been released from a internmet camp with the close of World War II, Pastor Robert and his wife Sumiko heard God's call to make a difference in a broken world. That fall Sumiko began a school with just 15 students.

70 years later what they began has...

Quick, stop what you are doing and check your pulse.....

Did you reach for your wrist, the carotid artery in your neck, or simply put your hand over you heart? Each place indicates something unique.

I'm told that our pulse doesn't just check your heart rate. It can also indicate blood pressure. Without adequate blood pressure your blood is not able to travel to all the parts of your body, depriving the tissue of its most cr...

Going through some history of our church, I came across this photo.

Here is Kailua Church with its brand new sanctuary. Kailua Church officially organized in 1945, under the leadership of Pastor Robert Nomi and 13 charter members.

This church had a mission to educate the children of Hawaii: Kailua Mission School was opened that same year with 15 pupils and 1 teacher, Mrs. Sumiko Nomi.

70 years have brought some dramatic cha...

Jesus' disciples asked him, "Teach us to pray."

Jesus' answer has become the most well known prayer in Christainity.

It's entitled "The Lord's Prayer."

It reads:

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:...

"Daddy!" That's my name.

"Help!" That's my cue.

"I've got something in my hair!" Huh?

As my son rounded the corner, I could tell something was up: His fashionalbe 3-year-old bowlcut was going punk with 4 inch spikes in every direction.

At 10pm (way past his bedtime) he had found some type of gell and applied it by the handful.

No big deal, kinda funny, actually. Until I smelled it. That strong, unmistakable...

Lots of churches do it just for Easter with bread and wine. Some practice it every week.

My church only does it 4 times a year, but we go the extra mile by washing everyone's feet BEFORE we partake.

Christians are supposed to love it. If you don't, there's something wrong with you.

What is Communion?

It is the Christian practice to remember Christ's sacrifice. The bread represents his body, t...
