So I may dwell with them...
Going through some history of our church, I came across this photo.
Here is Kailua Church with its brand new sanctuary. Kailua Church officially organized in 1945, under the leadership of Pastor Robert Nomi and 13 charter members.
This church had a mission to educate the children of Hawaii: Kailua Mission School was opened that same year with 15 pupils and 1 teacher, Mrs. Sumiko Nomi.
70 years have brought some dramatic changes to the church (facility is reversed!) and the town (population over 40,000). Still, if you compare the picture above to the one below you can see not everything has changed.
In Exodus 25:8, God tells Moses to "have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them."
Israel was traveling through a desert, living in tents. God wanted to be visibly present with them. They were in tents so He woudl be too. Later King Solomon built a temple. If he was going to live in a palace, so was his God.
It was just a tent - then God's glory filled it. It became a sanctuary.
It was a just another building - then God's glory filled it. It became a sanctuary.
Throughout history, humanity has built places for God to make His presence known. In order for you to be in His presence, you had to go to a place.
All that changed with Jesus. God came to us. We call this the Incarnation.
John 1:14 says "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Here was the very presence of God, distilled into the form of a servant.
God has always wanted to dwell with His people. Not in tents or palaces, but in person.
So what God did with buildings, He really wanted to do with people. He wants to do that with us.
Just a small group in the an upper room-then God's glory fillded them - They became a Sanctuary.
Just a self-righteous religious leader - then God's glory filled him - He became a Sanctuary.
I was just a selfish teenager looking for adventure - then God's glory fille me. I became a Sanctuary.
You may be messed up, broken, forgotten, weak, abused, angry...whater it is...
God glory can make you a Sanctuary. So that wherever you go, He goes too.
